THREE LIGHT LUXURY APARTMENTS

Kansas City, Missouri

SIGNAGE ILLUMINATES LUXURY IN THE KANSAS CITY SKYLINE

Three Light Luxury Apartments in Kansas City, Missouri made its home in a landmark, 26-story tower that provides panoramic views of the city’s skyline and the nearby Power & Light District. The look and feel of the building and its apartments is meant to marry the city’s rich musical heritage with its dynamic present-day amenities.

Archetype had collaborated with developer Cordish Companies on several projects across the country. When they approached us to create a sign family for this new apartment community, experiential graphic designer Selbert Perkins designed with luxury in mind.

BUILDING SIGNAGE ON GLASS WITH RGB ILLUMINATION

Being a landmark building, Three Light already turns a lot of heads. The developers wanted a an exterior sign that would attract even more attention and exude sophistication without distracting from the historical integrity of the building.

The giant architectural “3,” is 19’ tall and includes programmable RGB illumination that allows the apartment complex to modify colors for different events throughout the year. Perched on the top corner of the Three Light tower, the sign acts as a subtle beacon in the night sky.

The “3” is mimicked at ground level with a large monument sign just outside the building’s front doors. The monument “3” was built in-house by Archetype fabricators. Engineering the sign to be structurally sound involved close coordination with building engineers, signage detailing and fabrication engineers, and the Archetype installation crew.

INTERIOR SIGNAGE: IDENTITY AND WAYFINDING

Inside Three Light, you’ll find nods to Kansas City’s music history with visual salutes to jazz legends Count Basie and Charlie “Bird” Parker. White-to-black gradients evoke piano keys, brass tones conjure jazz instruments, and warm wood tones pull the look together.

That look is carried through to room ID and directional signage. And with 30,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor amenity space, an infinity pool, an indoor-outdoor bar, a demonstration kitchen, and a theater room, identification and wayfinding signage was crucial to helping residents get the most out of their Three Light living experience. Sleek bathroom signs with clean lines and polished edges are finished in a subtle bronze, while raised gold letters seem to glow from the white room identification placards.

The result is 26 stories of light, music, and luxury living. The apartment community has been recognized by the National Association of Home Builders’ 2020 Best in American Living™ Awards, and it won the 2025 Overall Property of the Year award from the Apartment Association of Kansas City.
